About Villa Vauban - Musée d'Art de la Ville de Luxembourg

The architecture of a bourgeois villa, revisited in the 21st century.

The new museum was built to reflect the historic character of its collections, a set of artworks gathered by wealthy individuals in the 18th and 19th centuries. The renovation and expansion of the existing building, an urban villa dating from 1873, were entrusted to the Luxembourg office of the architects Diane Heirend and Philippe Schmit. The contemporary extension they designed creates a fascinating dialogue with the historical architecture of the Villa Vauban.

A historic garden that invites you to relax

The architectural complex of the Villa Vauban is located in a park designed by the French architect Édouard André (1840 – 1911), one of the leading landscape planners of his time. The park will be redesigned so that it returns to its original appearance. The exceptional site of the Villa Vauban thus allows visitors to experience a historical collection in a calm and relaxing atmosphere, right in the heart of the city.

The collections

The exhibitions held at the Villa Vauban draw from the collections of the City of Luxembourg, which consist largely of Dutch artworks from the Golden Age (17th century) on the one hand and French historical paintings and landscapes from the 19th century on the other. Paintings, sculptures and engravings by European artists from the 17th to 18th centuries complete the package.
