6, Rue Ermesinde L-6437 Echternach, Luxembourg
Since the opening of the crematorium in Hamm, Luxembourg in 1995, any person who so wishes can be cremated in the Grand Duchy itself.
In addition to the cremation facilities themselves, the crematorium also offers a huge chapel and two "gardens of remembrance" for the strewing of ashes. In the same way as a burial, the ceremony can be civil or religious.
The "gardens of remembrance" are open to the public in the same way as a cemetery. This allows anyone who so wishes to visit the last resting place of their loved one. If you would prefer to make different arrangements, your funeral director will collect the urn and take it to the cemetery of your choice.
Nearly 35% of people in Luxembourg have already chosen this type of funeral. (In 1983, the rate of cremation was just 7.87%.)
Luxembourg has now joined Belgium and other northern European countries such as Holland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. In Great Britain, cremation is the most common form of funeral arrangement. The money-saving aspect should not be forgotten either. In fact, cremation is much less costly than burial, although it is the services, coffin and other expenses (notices in the papers etc.) that will determine the final cost of a funeral. Thus, the final cost also depends on the services chosen.
The Société Luxembourgeoise de Crémation has developed two options for those who have chosen cremation and want to ensure their most private choices are respected.
Créma Funéraire offers pre-arranged services, paid for in advance.
Créma Déclaration is a document with testamentary value that ensures that your personal wish to be cremated is respected.
