Witness to a great industry

An impressive site 

The museum occupies the site of the former Walert mine. Visitors can experience the working conditions underground in a network of several kilometres of preserved tunnels. Back at the surface, they will find an exhibition building, a brasserie and a playground. 

The underground mine tour

The surgace attractions are freely accessible. 

The underground mine tour takes place in groups accompanied by a guide. Entrance into the mine takes place by a mine train. Visitors are advised to wear shoes with flat heels and warm clothing, the temperature inside the mine being 10°C all year round and the relative humidity about 90%.

Walks above ground

The former open-pit mines close to the Museum are ideal places for walks and explorations. Nature is reclaiming the barren rocks and creating extraordinary landscapes and vegetation forms. Group tours with specialists from the Ellergronn nature conservation center can be booked via the MNM. 

Special tours and events 

All year round the MNM offers tours for children and schools as well as special tours, both above and below ground. 

Opening Hours

- April-June and September: Thursday to Sunday 2 pm - 6 pm (departure times of the tours are at 2:30 pm, 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm.)

- July-August: Tuesday to Sunday 2 pm - 6 pm (departure times of the tours are at 2:30 pm, 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm.)

- October-March: only for groups
