From Benedictine abbey to cultural centre and meeting place.
The Neumünster Abbey Cultural Centre (neimënster) is an impressive architectural ensemble that has known four centuries of turbulent history. This former Benedictine abbey, former military stronghold and former prison (particularly during the Nazi occupation) is located in the centre of the old quarters of the city, on an itinerary listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In summer, this spectacular site, with its cliff, military bunkers and the sinuous valley of the Alzette (from which sprang the beautiful Melusine), becomes the backdrop to the OMNI international open-air music festival and occasionally to big international theatre productions.
Neimënster provides a flourishing cultural offering Besides the OMNI festival of open-air concerts that take place in July every year, in late morning every Sunday, the abbey hosts pre-lunch jazz sessions and regular "springboard" concerts for young local musicians or performances by the songwriters of the Grund Club. The visual arts also hold an important position in the abbey with a permanent exhibition of the works of sculptor Lucien Wercollier and temporary themed exhibitions throughout the year. Other highlights in the programme include regular festivals and focuses dedicated to comedy, poetry, Baroque music, dance, cinema and storytelling. Not forgetting theatrical improvisation, socio-political debates and discussions, and big one-off festivals, such as the Feminist Cultural Festival, the Festival of Work and Culture (1 May) and the Theaterfest.
Under the authority of the Ministry for Culture, neimënster is a member of the European Network of Cultural Centres, the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue Between Cultures, the Theaterfederatioun, the European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) and Historic Conference Centres of Europe (HCCE).
